Joynt™

Joynt™ provides essential nutritional support for lubrication, free movement, and healthy joint function.* It's like a daily multivitamin specifically for your joints!

Joints, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and synovial fluid (for joint lubrication) undergo a continuous, but slow turnover and remodeling process. This is affected by many physiological factors, such as diet, supplements, activity, stress, gut health, immune status, infections, aging, hormones, toxic load, and/or various medications.

Joynt™ is essential nutritional support for lubrication, free movement, and healthy joint function.* Like a multivitamin specifically designed for the health of your joints.

So that you can feel a bit more joy in your life with good-feeling joints.

Take 4 capsules per day with meals or as directed by your health-care practitioner. (Divided dosing recommended.)

Glucosamine

Glucosamine is a natural compound in joint cartilage that protects chondrocytes (cartilage building cells) and also has an anti-inflammatory effect, i.e. reduces inflammation/pain.

These properties contribute the ability to slow cartilage deterioration, and to reduce pain in the process.

Studies show that this form of collagen can actually be utilized by the body, and is clinically effective to reduce pain and stiffness associated with knee osteoarthritis. 1

They evaluated the effectiveness of glucosamine/chondroitin, glucosamine, chondroitin, celecoxib (Celebrex) versus placebo (inactive pill, i.e. sugar pill).

They followed more than 1600 people with knee osteoarthritis (OA).

Here’s what they found in the GAIT study:

  • 2006 data - showed that those with moderate-severe knee osteoarthritis reported benefit from use of the supplement glucosamine/chondroitin, or their individual forms.
  • 2010 follow-up data – showed that the benefit of the supplements improved pain and function equal to the celecoxib

So, there was benefit.

The benefit was equal to a prescription NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication).

An additional international study in 2016 called the MOVES study reported: 2

  • The combination of glucosamine and chondroitin was as effective at relieving knee OA pain and swelling as celecoxib, without the side effects.
  • The authors concluded that they could be a good alternative for people who aren’t good candidates for NSAIDs because they have cardiovascular or GI conditions.

What form of glucosamine dictates best function?

“There are some studies that show improved joint flexibility and range of motion with glucosamine sulfate,” says Farshad Fani Marvasti, MD, MPH, director of Public Health, Prevention, and Health Promotion at The University of Arizona. “That’s the one I would take if you’re going to take it for joint stiffness.”

I agree with Dr. Marvasti, which is why we selected the glucosamine sulfate form in Joynt, at a pretty “stiff” dose of 1000mg daily.

The Mayo Clinic agrees with us – “that evidence supports the sulfate form over the hydrochloride form” for osteoarthritis.

What about the safety of glucosamine?

No serious side effects were reported in the studies referenced above.

However these supplements can have the following possible side effects:

01. Can interact with blood thinners, particularly older ones like coumadin (Warfarin)

02. May affect blood sugar levels, so use caution if you are diabetic

03. One small study showed a small increase in eye pressure in those with glaucoma

Bottom line:

If you are on blood thinners, are diabetic, or have glaucoma, you will want to clear this supplement with the physician managing those conditions.

In my personal experience, recommending this to thousands of patients over the years, I have never seen a reported significant side effects or complication from this supplement.

Collagen

The companion to glucosamine, on the journey to keep your joints, is collagen.

You may already know the importance of collagen:

  • It’s Depleted At About 1% Per Year From Age 30 Forward
  • Joint Tissues Need Specific Types Of Collagen

Our ORIGEN MSK Collagen product contains two bioactive patented collagen peptides, FORTIGEL® and TENDOFORTE®, derived from a process involving the hydrolysis of type I collagen.

These ingredients have been shown in clinical studies to boost anabolic processes in connective tissues and provide building blocks to support joint function and promote tendon and ligament strength.

In 16 human clinical trials, FORTIGEL® demonstrated positive effects for joint health among 2800 human subjects. Study subjects reported increased joint mobility and improved radiographic markers of cartilage health. 3,4

What we did in our ORIGEN Joynt product was incorporate another type of collagen important for joints – type 2.

So when combining the two products, you are getting a synergistic blend of collagen building blocks, rather than doubling up on the same type.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA)

Hyaluronic is another natural substance found in the fluid of your joints. It acts as a cushion and lubricant between the cartilage joint surfaces.

There are injectable forms – that I commonly use in my practice, to inject directly into the joint.

And there are oral forms – that I commonly recommend, that you can ingest – which is much easier than getting stuck with a needle!

It is known that people with osteoarthritis have decreased amounts of HA in their synovial joint fluid.

Now here’s the cool part and how this all ties back to your overall health. Especially the health of your gut and immune system.

HA is a big molecule, so your body can’t really absorb it and deliver it to your joints.

BUT, your gut microbiome, i.e. good bacteria, including Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, play a critical role in HA absorption. They are able to break it down to a much smaller form, that can be delivered through the blood into the joints and other tissues.

There is also a second mechanism now known where HA attaches to a receptor in your gut.

It then turns down inflammatory cytokines, and turns up anti-inflammatory cytokines.

What types of collagen are required to target optimal musculoskeletal (MSK? health?):

A 12-month clinical study identified no adverse event attributable to taken oral HA. 5

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)

It is formed from using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). DMSO is an organic form of sulfur also taken as a supplement.

Sulfur, which is a major component of MSM, has a role in making collagen and glucosamine.

And in turn has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties useful for reducing pain and inflammation from joint arthritis. 1

Because of that, studies show a synergistic benefit when taking MSM with glucosamine, with participants showing the most reduction in joint pain and swelling.

Boswelia

Gum-resin extracts of Boswellia serrata have been traditionally used in folk medicine for centuries to treat various chronic inflammatory diseases.

The resinous part of Boswellia serrata possesses monoterpenes, diterpenes, triterpenes, tetracyclic triterpenic acids and four major pentacyclic triterpenic acids i.e. β-boswellic acid, acetyl-β-boswellic acid, 11-keto-β-boswellic acid and acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid, responsible for inhibition of pro-inflammatory enzymes.

Out of these four boswellic acids, acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid is the most potent inhibitor of 5-lipoxygenase, an enzyme responsible for inflammation. 2

Turmeric

Curcuminoid extracts, the active ingredient from turmeric root has long been used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine as a natural treatment for inflammation.

Turmeric contains different bioactive components, mainly curcumin and demethoxycurcumin, bis-demethoxycurcumin, and turmeric essential oils – all having anti-inflammatory properties. 3

Generally well tolerated, some people can experience some side effects of stomach upset at higher doses. It also may have an interaction with blood thinners so caution is recommended in those taking blood-thinning agents.

And now…

Something even more exotic!

Green-Lipped Mussel

The green-lipped mussel (GLM) contains novel omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which exhibit anti-inflammatory and joint-protecting properties.

In a rat model it reduced pain and cartilage degeneration in rats with experimentally induced OA.

It is thought to have cartilage protective effects by suppression of oxidative damage and inhibition of catabolic factors implicated in the disease process of osteoarthritis. 4

Mussels have another nice advantage in being sustainably farmed – for food, and for this powerful omega-3 fatty acid compound!

But wait, there’s more.

Proprietary Mineral and Antioxidant Blend

Rounding out the ingredients, some additional plant compounds were included to support joint health.

All have been shown in the literature to have beneficial properties on reducing inflammation, slowing deterioration of cartilage, or a combination of the two.

01. Cetyl Myristoleate – a fatty acid also found in marine sources

02. Trans-Resveratrol – isolated from the skins of red grapes

03. Vitamin B3 – shown to have benefits for joint health including improved flexibility, reduction in inflammation

04. Trace Minerals – zinc, copper, manganese and selenium – all having connections to proper joint health and maintenance of cartilage

FAQs

Is this all I need to take to help my joints feel better?

It’s possible, but we believe good nutrition and supplementation is one part of a comprehensive approach to joint health! This product was formulated with natural compounds with clinical evidence to reduce pain and inflammation. It also contains compounds shown to improve joint health and function.

So we like to think of it as a daily multivitamin for your joints.

If my joints are more sore, can I take more?

The recommended dosing is from 1 to 4 capsules per day. The manufacturer does not recommend more than that.

Can I take this with other collagen products?

Yes, this products pairs synergistically with our MSK Collagen product. They contain unique ingredients that are complementary. You will not be doubling up on ingredients taking these two together.

I see there is hyaluronic acid (HA) in this product. Is that the same as what my doctor has injected into my knee?

It could be as there are injectable forms of HA where your physician may inject this compound directly into the joint.

We think it is much easier to take a capsule rather than get an injection!

Is MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane ) a problem for people sensitive to sulfa?

Most people allergic to sulfa drugs tolerate MSM very well.

Although it is not a sulfonamide-containing compound, MSM does share the sulfonyl moiety with the class of sulfa drugs that includes topiramate, acetazolamide, and hydrochlorothiazide

However, if you are concerned about the possible sensitivity to sulfur, start with a small amount of MSM and build up your intake slowly under the guidance of your health care practitioner.
